PERFORMANCE 2020
Literally moments before we started our dress rehearsal run, our lovely stage manager calmly walked up to our director, and said “So, Nancy, COVID has just been declared a pandemic from an epidemic.” We were lucky to open the show and put on one week of performances. Knowing that our show was some folx’s “last show before the world closed down” is bittersweet—an inspiration that propelled the project forward.
Conceptualization
Robyn and Nancy met at Bump n Grind cafe on the Drive in fall 2017. They met professionally and became fast friends. With Only A Visitor’s record Technicolour Education, Robyn documented her thoughts, feelings, and journey of learning about her maternal ancestry. Her great grandfather had paid the head tax, and her mom (Elaine Tseng) moved to the Pacific Northwest in the ‘60s. Inspired by the resonance between Elaine’s story and her own, Nancy wrote 8 songs for Double Happiness: Detour This Way, documenting her immigration journey when her family joined the mass exodus out of Hong Kong in the ‘90s. Those songs are now being compiled into Nancy’s album Twinned Spirits coming out Fall 2022.
